Houdini Hand Crystal Formation
Project type
Houdini

In this Houdini project, I created a dynamic sculpture of a hand made from a crystal-like material that grows organically upwards. Using VEX code within attribute and point wrangle nodes, I developed a system that converted the hand geometry into points and implemented a growth algorithm that "infects" these points, simulating a natural, branching expansion that captures the distinct structure of the fingers. To emulate the internal complexity of crystal refractions, I boolean fractured the geometry with randomized mountain node grids, displacing them specifically along the Y and Z axes to create intricate internal patterns. A custom refracting material was then crafted with subsurface scattering to enhance its translucent, crystalline appearance, adding a sense of depth and realism.
